Abstract

This paper has shown to some extent the importance of maps to the military, if the causality rate and the overall cost and duration of wars are to be reduced, there is the need for the army to have qualified cartographers and up to date maps.  Recent armed confrontations with terrorist groups and armed bandits have brought to focus the importance of maps and cartographers to the Nigerian military. This paper through a review of available literature and privileged discussion with some army personnel highlights the importance of maps to the military. In particular, it examines the relevance of the maps to the Nigerian army in terms of terrain evaluation for military purpose. Finally, it suggests strategies for addressing the Nigerian Army such as establishing cartographic units and training of personnel.
