Impact of Health Education Intervention and the Associated Demographic Variables on Knowledge of Oral Health Care among Pregnant Women in Bauchi State, Nigeria
Main Article Content
Abstract
Oral health care is the maintenance of the optimal state of the mouth and normal functioning of its organs, it is essential for maternal health promotion as pregnant women are particularly susceptible to gingival and periodontal diseases which adversely affect their health and that of the foetus. Therefore, the study examined the knowledge of oral health care before and after health education intervention and also ascertained the impact of residential location and educational qualification on knowledge of oral health care after the intervention among pregnant women in Bauchi State. A pre-experimental research design of one group pre-test and post-test design was used for the study. The target population for the study was 2728 pregnant women attending the selected health facilities in Bauchi State. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to sample 60 respondents from the selected health facilities in Bauchi State. A researcher-developed achievement test which was validated by three experts was used for the study. The reliability of the instrument was determined using the split-half method; a coefficient of .78 was obtained from Cronbach alpha. Inferential statistics of t-test and Analysis of Variance were used to analyse the data at 0.05 alpha level. The findings of the study were that the respondents’ pre-test score on knowledge of oral health care significantly differ from that of the post-test (P=002) and no difference was observed among respondents based on location and educational qualification after the 6-week intervention in the knowledge. It was concluded that health education intervention impacted the knowledge of oral health care among pregnant women in Bauchi State. The study recommended that health education on oral health care should be intensified by health educators to pregnant women on every antenatal visit.
