Lecturers’ Demographic Factors and Classroom Management in Public Universities in Rivers State

Abstract
The study investigated lecturers’ demographic factors and classroom management in public universities in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study adopted correlational research design. The population of the study comprised all the 313 lecturers in the three faculties of education in three public universities in Rivers State. The sample size of the study was 313 lecturers. The entire population was studied, adopting the census sampling technique. The researcher designed two self designed questionnaire instruments titled “Lecturers Demographic’ (LDQ) and ‘Class Management Questionnaire” (CMQ) were used for data collection. The instrument was structured after the modified four points Likert scale of measurement. Out of the 312 copies of questionnaires distributed 300 representing 96% were duly completed and returned and the analysis used the returned copies for its analysis. In order to ensure that Face and content validities, the researcher gave copies of the instrument to the supervisor and two lecturers in the area of Educational Measurement and Evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was done using Crombach Alpha and obtained .921>.71 which showed that the instrument was highly reliable. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the various research questions. The Pearson Product Correlation Coefficient (PPMC) was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The study found that the variables of experience, qualification and gender correlated with classroom management in public Universities in Rivers State. The study concluded that qualification, experience and gender of the lecturers relates to classroom management. The study recommended that experience of lecturers should be put into consideration during the allocation of core or departmental courses among others.
